PICNIC Conference in Paris - Web Services for Regional Healthcare
International/Europe Posted by Dave Scott on Tuesday August 27, 2002 @ 02:25 PM
from the International/Europe dept.
The EC Fifth Framework PICNIC project is pleased to announce the "Web Services for Regional Health Care Networks" conference to be held in Paris on September 26-27 at the Novotel Atria Hotel (Porte de Bagnolet). PICNIC was initiated by regional health care providers, who are developing the next generation of regional health care networks supporting new ways of providing health and social care. PICNIC will deliver open source components, develop a model for future regional health care networks, and make the European market for telematic care services more cohesive. Very informative website, thanks.
For the benefit of those of us not intimately familiar with the European definition of "regional" healthcare networks. Are these political boundaries or some other arbitrarily defined area?

A regional health care network in Europe is usually a geographic-centric (not necessarily politically-centric) area of care delivery. Let's say, the region of metropolitan Paris, or a county like Funen (in Denmark). But this is not a restrictive boundary. A region may include linked areas of different countries. Europe is unifying and with the freedom of EU citizens to move freely between member states, there is a need for medical information to be available in different jurisdictions independant of the software used. PICNIC is developing these components. It's a very exciting project.

So with that definition of region, there really isn't a region and it may as well be EU wide?
I'm still confused about what 'components' PICNIC is developing....is this a data model? a communications model? an implementation of existing models?
      Thanks.....
