RFC: Journal of Open Source Medical Software
LinuxMedNews Posted by Saint on Monday September 18, 2000 @ 06:52 PM
from the you-knew-it-was-coming dept.
Updated: 5/8/01 The journal is a reality at: www.josmc.org. This is a Request For Comment (RFC) article on beginning a Journal for open source medical stuff. This will be a scholarly journal about open source medical software development and similar topics. I'm tentatively calling it as above in the title, but if anyone has a suggestion, I'm willing to entertain it. Please let your views be known below. If you'd like to be on the editorial board, please e-mail with subject line: Editorial board, then in the body: Name, Occupation, relevant Editing/Writing experience and CV. Digg this article

What would the qualifications be to sit on the editorial board ? It would help if these were posted. While I very much doubt that I would qualify personally, allow me to encourage people who might qualify to respond to this. I've been promoting open source software for medical applications at my employer (a large, internationally known, midwestern medical provider) for some time. Professional recognition of the field in this manner would be a wonderful help ! Thanks, -- Pat

Of course there should be a journal on this topic! Open source medical software makes a lot of sense to me. I am a physician who has worked in the quality improvement field for the past 6 years working with hospitals and physicians trying to have an impact on the processes that occur in the office and inpatient setting. Hospital quality departments use free software; their budgets are so constrained that they often cannot consider much else. I would like to see more of an emphasis on quality improvement in the open source model since if we just replace paper records with electronic records we'll just replace a paper mess with an electronic one. The time has come to re-engineer the entire healthcare system so that it is more responsive to both patient and physician needs. There is no better way to do this than through computerization. The best way to guarantee voluntary adoption of the technology is to make it free. I'd be happy to be on an editorial board or just contribute. Charles Stimler

You may be interested to know that the Insight Consortium is working on a similar idea. Obviously the submissions would probably be oriented around ITK, but i dont think thats necessarily a requirement. http://www.insightsoftwareconsortium.org/InsightJournal/ Anyway, i think one or more journals like this would be great.
